A story by Tarun Bhardwaj

Her website was beautiful.
That was the problem.

A true story. My friend's name and some details are changed for her privacy, and the screenshots are recreated from the real ones.

₹2.5 lakh. Two developers. One designer. Eight months. Zero bookings.

This is the story of a screenshot that made me quit my job.

Ringing…

Soniya is the most gifted healer I know. People sit with her for an hour and leave lighter. They find her through word of mouth, and they stay for years. Her WhatsApp never stops.

Eight months earlier, she had decided to reach the people who didn't know her yet: clients in Dubai, Toronto, London. She hired a developer to make a website work, and a designer to make it beautiful. It was beautiful. This is what it had done:

“Tarun, everyone tells me the website is beautiful. Nobody books. I'm taking it down.”

She had already made up her mind about why: “Nobody pays ₹11,000 to a stranger on a website. People only trust what they've seen in person.”

I had a good job and no plans to leave it. I'd spent years building websites and software for businesses, and watching which ones sold and which ones just sat there looking nice.

If I'm right, you don't need a new design. You need different words.

I didn't look at the colours. I opened it the way her next client would: a woman in Dubai, in the worst year of her life, about to send ₹11,000 to someone she has never met.

Beautiful. And not one thing a frightened stranger needs to hear. So I asked for the one thing that would tell me what was missing.

It took me four minutes to see it. It took her a week to believe me.

On WhatsApp, Soniya answered every one of those questions herself, patiently, often at midnight. That's why her clients trusted her.

Her website answered none of them.

I've spent years studying one question: why do people say yes? The research is clear, and it's been written down for decades, most famously in Cialdini's Influence. When we're unsure, we look for proof, for someone who clearly knows their work, for people like us who went first, and for someone to take the risk away. People don't buy beautiful. They buy certainty.

Her developer made it work. Her designer made it beautiful. Nobody made it sell.

So we didn't touch the design. We changed the words, and every one of them answered a question from her chats:

I sit up.

₹11,000. Dubai. Paid.

Somewhere in Dubai tonight, a woman I will never meet, maybe in the hardest year of her life, found a stranger on the internet and trusted her with it. Not because the website got prettier. Because for the first time, it said what she needed to hear.

Tarun. It worked. 😭🙏

I read it once. Twice. A third time. My thumb is hovering over the keyboard and I can't think of a single thing to type.

Eleven nights ago she said, “I'm taking it down.” Eight months of believing she wasn't good enough for the internet. And she had never been the problem. Not once. Nobody had ever told her what was really missing.

And then a quieter thought arrives, the kind you can't put back once it's in.

How many Soniyas are out there tonight?

Sitting in front of a beautiful website and a dashboard that says ₹0. Brilliant at what they do. Slowly starting to believe the problem is them.

Something in my chest goes very still. It isn't excitement. It's quieter than that, and heavier. The feeling of finding the thing you were supposed to be doing all along, and knowing that if you look away now, you'll always know you looked away.

I don't know how yet. I only know I can't unsee it.

That's the moment I knew what I'd do with the rest of my working life.

Here's Soniya's week, a few months later:

She was wrong about one thing. People do pay a stranger on a website, once the website stops being a stranger.

I didn't sleep that night. Soniya wasn't unlucky. I was almost sure she was normal. At 1:12 am I found out, with one message to twenty friends who run businesses:

Quick question. Has your website ever brought you a customer? Be honest.

Great people. Great businesses. Real skill. Every one of them had a developer who made their website work, and a designer who made it look good. Not one of them had anyone who made it sell.

And every one of them had quietly started believing what Soniya had believed: that online just isn't for businesses like theirs.

I knew it wasn't true. I had just watched it not be true.

Resignation: Tarun Bhardwaj

Three months later

Hi,

Please accept this as my formal resignation. It's been a good few years, and I'm grateful.

I'm leaving to start something with my brother. There's a problem I can't stop thinking about.

Tarun

Recreated · details hidden

It wasn't a business plan. It was a list of names on my phone. My brother Ankit and I started RITE Growth with one idea: to be the third person, for every business that's great at what it does and invisible online.

We knew why people buy. But a website that sells also has to be fast, secure, and never break at 9:42 pm. So I called the best engineer I knew: Rohit Kumar. Eight years building software at TCS and AI platforms for Adobe, ranked 116th in India in TCS CodeVita. He had a great job too.

I didn't pitch him a company. I showed him Soniya's screenshot, and the twenty replies, and told him what we believed: if it's right, it deserves to be found. Almost none of them are.

He was quiet for a long time. Then he sent this:

Rohit

I'm in. Let's help them. When do we start?

11:08 pm

He became our CTO. Not for a bigger salary. For the same reason I left mine: once he'd seen it, he couldn't unsee it either. Now every promise our words make, his work keeps.

What we believe

If it's right, it deserves to be found.

Here's what nobody tells you.

The big brands you compete with aren't winning because their websites are prettier. They're winning because they know a secret: how people decide. Every line on their pages is there on purpose. The review placed exactly where doubt creeps in. The “free returns” next to the price. The one easy button. Tested, measured, and paid for by people whose only job is to turn a stranger into a yes.

It isn't magic. It's a science that's been written down for decades. They have the third person. You've just never been offered one.

That's why we exist: every great business should get the same secret the big brands use. Not their budget. Their secret. Because you're just as good, and your website should finally say so.

We have a name for it on our wall. Our mission: No great business goes unfound. And a number we check every month: 1,000 great businesses found by 2030. Soniya was the first.

That's why the first step is still free, for anyone. It's exactly what I did for Soniya: read your website the way your next customer will, and show you what it isn't telling them. Some people hire us after. Many fix it themselves. Both are fine. It's how this started.

Our promise to every business we work with

  • You'll always reach one of us directly, on WhatsApp.
  • We personally review every free plan.
  • We'll tell you honestly if we're not the right fit.
  • Pay only when you approve: a small advance to start, the rest after you approve your finished website.

Tarun, Ankit & Rohit

If your website looks beautiful but people aren't buying, I want you to hear this clearly.

You don't need another developer. You don't need another designer. You need the third person.

That's all we do. It's what we did for Soniya. It's why we exist.
